History Happy Hour: Roanoke's Black Colony of the Civil War

Many people have heard of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the mysterious disappearance of its settlers in the 1580s, but few know of the island's other colony that existed centuries later during the Civil War. After a Union victory, Roanoke became home to the largest population of formerly enslaved Black southerners during this era. In this class we explore the incredible growth of this forgotten community, the issues they encountered, and why it came to an end after just five years.
