Reefer Madness: The History of Anti-Cannabis Propaganda

Maya will be back at SeaWeed Co. Cannabis Dispensary in South Portland to host “REEFER MADNESS” at their special 420 event!

Perceptions of cannabis took a dark turn in the early 20th century from being celebrated as a valuable resource to feared as a "burning weed with roots in hel!"

How could this have happened? Let's find the answer together by exploring some of the most absurd anti-cannabis propaganda, such as sensationalist and racist journalism of the 1930s, cult-classic films like Reefer Madness, "Just Say No," D.A.R.E., and all our favorite PSAs from the '90s. These “educational” campaigns and media created a culture of fear around one of humanity’s longest-used resources that vilified it to the point of prohibition.

Despite much of society's reacceptance and embrace of cannabis as a legitimate medicinal and recreational substance today, we still feel the effects of such propaganda. Join cultural historian Maya Rook to chill out, laugh, and learn something new with this free class as we celebrate 4/20!”

REEFER MADNESS will be held at 6:30pm during the 420 celebration at SeaWeed Co. South Portland, at 185 Running Hill Road.

This offering is FREE/ Donation based, drop ins welcome!

Please note that it will be held outside on our back deck, so be sure to bring layers and wear comfortable clothes. The vibe will be lounge-y, casual and cozy. :)
