The Freedmen’s Colony of Roanoke

Many people have heard of the Lost Colony of Roanoke and the mysterious disappearance of its settlers, but did you know there was another colony on the island during the Civil War? After a Union victory, Roanoke became home to the largest population of formerly enslaved black southerners during the war. In this class we explore the incredible growth of this community, the issues they encountered, and why it came to an end after just five years.
