Even as magical practitioners reclaim the term "witch" and imbue it with new power, the stereotype of the harmful female witch still lingers in the present day. But where exactly did this image come from? In this class, we'll investigate one of the most influential and misogynistic pieces of witch-hunting literature: The Malleus Maleficarum (1486). Together we'll dive deep into this text and explore how it contributed to the negative portrayal of witches, informed popular conceptions of dark magic, and fueled the persecution of women during the witch trials.
This class is offered as a FREE virtual event through the Pittsford Community Library and Henrietta Public Library.
