Misogyny, Witchcraft, and the Malleus Maleficarum

  • Raven and Crow Co. 11 Pleasant Street Brunswick, ME, 04011 United States (map)

Even as magical practitioners reclaim the term "witch" and imbue it with new power in the present day, the stereotype of the harmful female witch still lingers. But where exactly does this image come from? In this class, we'll investigate one of the most influential and misogynistic pieces of witch-hunting literature: The Malleus Maleficarum (1486).

Together we'll dive deep into this text and explore how it contributed to the negative portrayal of witches, informed popular conceptions of dark magic, and fueled the persecution of women during the witch trials in both Europe and America.

This event will take place at Raven & Crow Co., 11 Pleasant St, Brunswick, Maine
