Maya will be back in Rochester for a special in-person History Happy Hour with the Rochester Brainery!
Fears of witchcraft devastated Salem Village and the surrounding areas during the infamous witch trials of 1692. While the community adhered to widespread beliefs that all magic was only possible through the help of demons, there is also evidence that many people still engaged with folk magic in their daily lives. From witch cakes and “poppets” to oomancy and more, dive deep and learn all about the folk magic that occurred in Salem during this era. In this class hosted at CRISP Rochester, you’ll explore the origins of these traditions, investigate their role in the Salem Witch Trials, and even practice a 17th-century form of divination (fortune telling) together.
